Alicante shows evidence of human activity as far back as the Phonecian period. The most significant historical remains are from the Roman period, the Muslim kingdoms and the modern period from the 1500s to the present day. The remains of the Roman town of Lucentum have been partly excavated in the suburb of San Juan in the north of the city. The atmospheric old town which clusters beneath the Castle of Santa Barbara contains many interesting buildings and monuments showing a mixture of baroque, classical and ninteenth century styles. The museum of antiquities (MARQ) beneath the north slopes of the castle provides insites into the history of the town.
Alicante is the capital of the province of Alicante within the autonomous community of Valencia. |

Alicante has many fine restaurants in the town centre and around the redeveloped marina. The marina itself provides a fine backdrop for a meal or a coffee. The spacious promenades around the marina frequently host exhibitions, food festivals and shows. The promenades and avenues which are lined with market stalls are thronged with strollers on hot summer evenings.
