If you want a day away from the beach, there are many things to do in the area.

Tabarca

The island of Tabarca lies just off the shore and is visible from the beaches of La Marina and Santa Pola. It has a quaint walled town, a beach, an old church and a fort, but it is best known for the marine reserve which surrounds the island and for its' seafood restaurants. If you are a sub aqua diver or just fancy a day snorkelling, then Tabarca is the pplace to visit. The restaurants all serve traditional dishes such as paella as well as seafood. They all have seaviews.

Regular ferries run to the island from Sanat Pola and Alicante.

Rio Safari Park

The Rio Safari Park lies just outside Sanata Pola on the road to Elche. It has theme park style rides, gardens, cafes and restaurants as well as animals. It offers a fun and relaxing day out for the whole family.

Elche

Eche is famed for its 'Palmeral', which is the remains of once massive palm orchards which give the city it's unique character. There are still over 110,000 palms in and around the city and the remains of the original 'Huerts' can still be seen in many places. At it's height the palmeral contained over 280,000 date palms. The history of the city dates back much further than the Palmeral which has its foundation in the moorish period. It was also the site where the famous bust of La Dama d'Elx was found in the late 19th Century. This life sized bust dates from a pre-phonecian iberian civilization and is over 3000 years old. The bust is currently on show in the Altamira Palace in Elche on loan from its usual home in Madrid until November 2006. Elche also has a delightful basilica, a fine botanical garden in the Huert de Cura, Roman remains at the site of Colonia Illice, galleries, museums and many squares with cafes and restuarants. Elche has been names a World Heritage site by UNESCO.

Guadalest

The medieval hill town of Guadalest is a popular day trip. Carved out of a mountain top, Gaudalest offers an interesting look back in time. It offers lots to do with its castle ruins, manor house (containing period exhibitions and a small art gallery), fortified hill top town, quaint shops, museums, lake and breathtaking views of the surrounding valley and down to the Bay of Altea. Guadalest is approximately an hour and half drive from the area around La Marina. It lies in the mountains behind benidorm.

Theme Parks

Any of the theme parks around Benidorm make a good day out. Only an hours drive away, they include:

  • Terra Mitica is one of Europe's most exciting Theme Parks. Thrilling rides hidden amongst the recreated landscapes of Ancient Egypt, Rome, Greece, and Others.
  • Aqualandia This is a modern water park, with trained staff and excellent facilities, including picnic areas and a variety of restaurants.
